I'm posting this from home after my walk as I was doing my good deed for the day when I snapped the picture-

Just before the bridge I ran into a family (Mike, his wife, and 2 girls about 5- twins?)  who had started on the Weinberg Nature Center trail (about 1 1/2 miles north)  and got lost. So Holly and I guided them to the parking lot where I park (about 1/2 mile from this bridge)  and left the mom and the girls at the playground while I drove the Dad to the Nature Center parking lot to pick up his car.

No music, chatting with the family about the woods.

We got hold of Crispy's summer reading list for 7th grade the other day, and I was thrilled to find that it includes The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy! They have flagged it as "challenging", but I think he's more than up to it, and as I can quote huge sections of it from memory he can ask me if he needs any of it explaining. I'm really looking forward to finding out what he thinks of it- I think he's going to love it!

I dug out my CDs of the original radio series so that we can listen to it onto the way down to NC in August (after he's read the book of course- although really the radio series came first...) and I'm currently enjoying it as I walk through the woods :)

I got this free app from the Amazon Android App Store that tracks workouts; so I turned it on yesterday when I did the short loop, 2.25 miles, and it did at the end it said I had only burned 220 calories.  That can't be right can it? Only 100 calories a mile - that's barely a donut for each dog-walk!

Interesting Saturday!

What an interesting walk today. Not only was there the solved mystery of the chain-link compound to blog about, but also the big tree down across the trail.  Then I ran into an older lady I see here often (she's a professional dog walker), and in chatting with her about the woods and the stuff going on I mentioned the little ruined building about 1 1/2 miles along the upper trail. And it turns out that back in the '30s and '40s there was camping in these woods, and that was a latrine/wash-house. This also explains all the brick and stone tables that are dotted at random in the woods up there. I had already passed the building when we spoke, but tomorrow I shall have to have a closer look!

Absolutely beautiful day for my folks last day, 77.6F and blue skies.

Just ran into an incredibly stupid woman with a German Shepherd that probably weighed twice what she did that she had absolutely no control over even though it was on a leash; and she had the nerve to yell at me that Holly (who was walking very nicely to heel next to me and had no interest in her dog whatsoever as I had a tennis ball in my hand) was not on a leash - "can you control your dog or mine will attack" - sheesh!  Some peoples is just dumb!

I'm running a little late, so for the fun of it I jogged the first section on the lower path (about 1 1/4 miles). I must be in better shape than I thought, coz I was hardly even breathing heavily. Maybe I'll try running all the way round one of these days, just to see if I can.

It confused the heck out of Holly though!

Holly and I came out at lunchtime as the rain has finally stopped for a while (we're supposed to get more later). It's a bit humid and 67.2F.

The ground is totally saturated and most of the trails are shallow streams- it's a good thing we didn't get any strong thunderstorms as I'm sure the ground is soft enough that lots of trees would easily blow over!

Amazon delivered my "pocket chainsaw" today, so I just spent a happy 15 minutes clearing the deadfall that blocked the path at the far end by the stream. The saw worked perfectly (I'll post a link and some before-and-after pics over on the main blog), so that'll be packed away in the back of the car with my other essential dog-and-hiking tools once I've cleaned and oiled it :)
